Week 1

Before you go on another tirade Hartzell, I'm just posting this now in case I'm traveling when it needs to go up. I also want to officially announce to the world that you have enough Nike's to make any rapper on Cribs jealous.

thats like me saying Lux has more JCrew in your closet than Michelle Obama. And yeah, I'll be wearing Nike's in NYC when i visit the mecca of baskeball for the games Tuesday night, could you blame me?

There is no doubt it'll be the head coach of West Virginia, however, who will take worst dressed at the Garden awards. Ol' huggy bear, aka Bob Huggins, if you're reading this, please pack that mustard suit you donned so well your first year in the Big East. That thing even makes Matt look good.

Dont know if yall saw Florida PG Jai Lucas, son of former NBA player and coach John Lucas, will transfer out of Billy Donovan's program. This is the only other SEC squad appearing on top 25 polls along with Tennessee to start the season, but this is a bad year for basketball in the South. Kentucky is still down, and they're picking Ole Miss to win the SEC West this year. It's looking like a 3-4 team NCAA bid will be it.

Just wanted to make that public knowledge so when the only teams I rank all season are coming from the TooBigEast, Pac10, ACC, Davidson and Gonzaga I dont want to hear it. Concentrated wealth in CBB this year.

It all begins tonight...for those of us lucky enough to have ESPNU, the beloved Dukies open the season at 7pm. Get some while you can.

Tuesday will be when the majority of games begin...so keep an eye out.

T-minus one month til Jimmy V.

Does anyone know if Matt is alive or has internet access?

Matt. said...

Dur,

"Get some while you can" is that Duke's team motto this year? This team is more overrated than Sean May when he got drafted.

Stephen's right, the SEC is down and out this year. The SEC West doesn't even exist as far as I'm concerned.

Any word on where Lucas will land? Will OK State offer him a spot?

The Orange will kick things off this Sunday, against LeMoyne, a tuneup for the rematch of the 1991 first round NCAA game against Richmond. I will of course be in attendance, and that came can be found on ESPN U.

After that its to KC, where the Orange will face Florida. Chomp Chomp.

Yes, Duke is probably overrated, but tell me when they aren't overrated Matt. It just something we all have to come to peace with.

And actually I think the motto is "My life is my card...CawCaw"

They will be better than you think this year, as long as everyone stays healthy. The team is deeper than it has been in the past five years, so that will serve for an fast paced team this year. As long as they shoot the ball well they will win 25 games.

Matt. said...

Good luck tonight against Georgia Southern. Look for GASO to cover that spread. Kyle Singler looks more autistic this year than last by the way.

As long as any team shoots well they could win 25 games, especially in a conference that has no more than 4 NCAA bound teams.

M. Drury said...

Well...who covered the spread.

Also, the ACC gets no less that 5 teams in the tournament, more than likely 6. Sorry that they can't get 25 like the big east since they are a 50 team league...might as well start a ncaa tournament play in for a league that big. The better teams get easy wins against the likes of st.john, seton hall ,rutgers, south fla, depaul and even in the last few years cinncy...I mean you put any decent team in the big east and they are given at least 4 gimme wins in conference. where in the acc is a gimme win.

Come on Matt you know a little bit more about basketball than this...let face the facts.

Matt. said...

Dur,

I don't really consider VT and Clemson solid tourney teams. Those schools don't even show up for games that they are supposed to win. If those 4 BE teams are gimmes, then so are UVA, NC St., FSU, and BC. Thats a third of the ACC that is uncompetitive.

No conference is as top heavy as the BE. That doesn't mean that there are 4 gimme games on everyone's schedule. You take a middle of the road (Clemson, Wake, VT) ACC team and plant them in the Big Beast they wouldn't get 7 wins. Yet you take a middle of the road BE team (Nova, Prov, WVU) and they finish third or fourth in the ACC.

Case closed.

M. Drury said...

Vader,
You make valid points, but I still don't think that you can say that UVA, BC, and NCSt, and FSU are as easy wins as any of those BE teams.

You but either middle of the road teams in either conference and they both are middle of the road. Clemson, VT, Wake are all even with Nova, and WVU..I won't say that Prov is a middle of the road team..what have they done lately.

Yes, I do have to say that VT and Clemson are tourney choke jobs, but we are just talking about getting into the tourney

This debate will go on and on and on because you love the BE and well the ACC is my conference so lets just call it even and report on our respective conference for the season.

My poll is unchanged except for Kentucky since they lost to VMI. Come on Billy G, you made me look like an ass. I swap them with Wash St (for one week as a shout out) because they just scored the first 28 points against Miss Valley St.

Matt. said...

lux i hope you learned from that decision to include kentucky in anything other than a top 50 poll. those kind of mistakes are what costs you street cred.

but the peacoats gets it all back for you.

S. Hartzell said...

well said Matt, well said. The SEC might be worse than we all thought. The line is 18 for Kentucky/UNC tonight, that said, I'd still have to take the 'cats and the under. All those 5 star recruits didnt get sorry overnight. They wont win in Chapel Hill but they will slow the game down and keep it within 20 all night.

by the way I like ESPN going overboard this year on the cbb coverage. Having Penn and drexel play what turned out to be a great game at 10 AM is awesome. I'm already sick of Steve Lavin though and we're not even at Thanksgiving.

Lux said...

How are the engaged and married kids making fun of my peacoat? Have fun at Bed, Bath and Beyond this weekend boys.

Lux said...

So Davidson goes down and we all now have one loss from their Power 16. I would gloat right now but OU doesn't exactly compare to VMI.

Matt, the big east got romped by the ACC last night. Rd 1 goes to Dru and nice comeback last night, I'm sure your rally head band helped. What's going on with Devendorf by the way? That shit legit?

I'll be watching the Coaches vs Cancer doubleheader this Friday boys in the same seats we have for Jimmy V. Hopefully it's Duke v UCLA if all goes as planned on Thursday.

Also, you guys should all read this if you didn't see it already:

a 12 point loss at BC by St. John's (arguably the worst big east program for the last decade, maybe more) isn't really that bad. i guess those are the kind of arguments that need to be made so that the whole BE/ACC issue can remain alive, because its really not even that close.

lavin needs to shave for real though, he looked like he spent the entire offseason watching his old UCLA teams decompose, all while drinking bottles of cheap potato vodka, most certainly russian.

also, kentucky is 0-2, and you should have inserted VMI in Kentucky's spot. but since the pac 10 is super watered down this year, I guess you gotta rank em while you can.

the link you sent gets an error message, so what is the article.

as for devendorf, the allegations seem a little far fetched, but he is a thug. so who really knows. i knew about the incident about a week ago, and it broke last night right before the game.

but the headband prevailed. oakland (mcc favorite) comes here on friday, then its off to KC.

Lux said...

A week early huh, were you also called in for questioning?

The link is from Matt's boy Parish's blog about the Arizona fouling disaster.

Matt. said...

could michigan spell trouble for dur's dukies.

probably under most of your radars, but seton hall got a nice win last night against a USC team (ranked by the same guy who loves kentucky).

Lux said...

How does a top 25 team losing fly under anyone's radar? Pac 10 had a bad night and I don't think it was just early season mistakes. Ucla and usc just might not be that good. Once again though, matt's safe choices make him proud of himself. Its the same choices that cause him to come in 2nd and 3rd in fantasy leagues. Even against kids that had never played fantasy before. Have fun with your collection of bronze medals.

Matt. said...

Well looks like someone is a little cranky when they post. Don't be upset because the P10 isn't what it was last year.

Not sure how my choices are safe, we have 11 of 16 same teams, and I picked a couple that weren't necessarily ranked to open the season (Syracuse and UNLV). You took some "not so safe" picks yourself with WVU, and you should be proud of that. You overestimated a couple of teams but thats okay, just don't put them back in this year.

Its not about safe choices, its about consistently being right. Which is why you only played one season of fantasy hoops and spent hours agonizing over stats, and I play more than one and consistently do well. Its just consistency. If you need me to show you a couple of things in regards to it so that you may be more consistent, well I'll be up for the Jimmy V, and we can talk then.

How was your view for the CvC classic? Sucks that the finals didn't give you a lot to hang your hat on, just bad luck.

Don't sleep on X this year. What a game against VT, are they ACC?
